You have to know the product very well to be able to integrate. Micro Focus can also integrate but it's more complex. It integrates very well with Microsoft applications.
The functionality of the whole software is good." "I can't think of any improvements yet for Veeam because they are very good.
You get a response within one hour, even in the evening or night. We don't need it to perform complicated tasks." "The integration with some storage systems like HP or Nutanix and great support are the most valuable features.
Veeam was able to reduce our overall backup windows while reducing our dedicated backup infrastructure." "Vendor integration for many of the enterprise features have allowed for us to have greater performance from our storage vendors further improving on our commitments to protect our clients' data." "The most valuable feature is the ability to verify that backups are valid." "Features with the most value are Instant VM Recovery, SQL Explorer and Exchange Explorer." "The most valuable feature is adaptability, where it automatically adapts to the environment that it's being installed on." "The product is very simple in its design. Google "Commvault Price List filetype:pdf" and you'll find quite a few rough guides out there."Before Veeam, we had backup infrastructure sprawl.
I'd suggest you're looking around $5-6k for the base license and a media agent license and perhaps $3-4k for a snapshot license and around $800/tb if you want to backup to disk, but I could be way off the mark. We do D2D for some things (SQL) but the Commvault agents are expensive so where possible we use ntbackup then go to tape, unless there's a real benefit in doing it using Commvault.Ĭosts would be difficult simply because we've been using it 5 years and it's grown vs. What are you using it for now? What did it cost you? If I had unlimited funds I'd use it for all our backups. you license to protect Xtb of data and you're allowed to use whatever combination of products you like. That said, I believe with Simpana 9.0 they've moved to a dual pricing approach, with the option to license the traditional way, on features, or to license based solely on capacity i.e. I don't like their pricing - don't expect it to be cheap vs. I like Commvault as a product (we use it).
Thoughts? All i know is i have to get off this host-based bakcup solution ASAP because it's slow as hell. When I need to restore something to exchange at the application level, it's typically weeks or months after the item's been deleted. I have a fairly long retention policy for deleted items in exchange, so i'm not sure how much i get from application aware backups. Theoretically, I could use array-based snaps to get a functioning VM/application up that's valid within the last hour in a couple minutes, and then use DPM2010 or Symantec CPS to get myself up to the minute? or pull the transaction logs out of the images that Veeam/BE2010 saved to roll forward the exchange/sql server databases? Lastly, there are options like DPM2010 to provide CDP to SQL and Exchange. Backup exec could do D2D2T on its own, but might still be more expensive overall. For backup to tape, veeam would have to work in conjunction with backup exec since it doesn't deal with tape on its own. More granular recovery would have to be provided by veeam or symantec BE2010. I'd still have the vmware-integrated equallogic snaps though, so i could still recover instantly from a major disaster. Everything is integrated into the one console.īesides commvault, it seems i'd have to give-up my equallogic application aware snapshots. Commvault seems simple: array takes snaps, the data is transfered to a DL2100 appliance and kept there for a while and then transfered to tape library for long-term retention and xfer off-site. We were on a short deadline when purchasing the SAN and didn't have time to fully consider all the backup options (and an appropriate budget). It looks like the optimal solution because it directly integrates with the EqualLogic snapshot engine, but I'm worried it might be $$$$. I haven't contacted commvault about simpana 9 w/snap protect yet but I intend to do so tomorrow.
